Curtis Cokes (1937–2020) was one of the most skilled and respected welterweights of the 1960s. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Cokes turned pro in 1958 and built a reputation as a sharp counter‑puncher with excellent conditioning and a powerful right hand.
In 1966, he captured the undisputed world welterweight championship, holding the WBA, WBC, and NYSAC titles. Cokes successfully defended his crown against top contenders including Jean Josselin, Francois Villeiman, Charlie Shipes, Willie Ludick, and Ramon La Cruz. His disciplined style and ring intelligence made him one of the standout champions of his era.
After retiring in 1972, Cokes became a respected trainer and appeared in the boxing film Fat City. His contributions to the sport earned him induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.
