In 1987 James hit .312 for Atlanta over 134 games with 154 hits, 80 runs, 37 doubles, 10 home runs and 61 RBI, and the back notes he ranked fifth in the National League in batting that year. The career highlights trace the path there: .282 for the Brewers’ Vancouver farm club in 1986, sixth in the Pacific Coast League in both stolen bases (30) and runs (85); most of 1985 lost to a shoulder injury; Brewers’ top rookie in 1984, second on the club in batting; and .336 in 129 games at Vancouver in 1983. Atlanta acquired him from Milwaukee on 1/19/87 for outfielder Brad Komminsk.
