Why This Card Matters

Bill Campbell had one of the great relief seasons of the 1970s in 1976, going 17-5 with 20 saves in 78 appearances for Minnesota and taking the American League Fireman of the Year award, then became one of the first significant free agents of the post-reserve-clause era when he signed with Boston that winter. He came to the Cubs before the 1982 season and pitched two years at Wrigley, which is the stretch this card documents. The 1983 Topps design - the large action photo with the inset portrait in the corner - is one of the most recognized layouts of the decade and remains a favorite among set builders. Cards from this era were printed in enormous quantities, so a genuinely sharp copy is the thing worth paying for, not the card number.
