Why This Card Matters
Alvis Woods homered in **his first major-league at-bat** — a pinch-hit, two-run shot off Francisco Barrios on **April 7, 1977, in the first game the Toronto Blue Jays ever played**, before 44,649 in a snowstorm at Exhibition Stadium. He was the **45th player in major-league history** to do it and only the 11th as a pinch-hitter. An original Blue Jay out of the 1976 expansion draft, his best season came in **1980: .300 with 15 home runs and an .844 OPS**. This is his card in the 1982 Topps base set, #49.

| Condition | Raw / ungraded. Graded by us as EX (Excellent) — the upper-left corner has a fold with softness at the tip — see the condition notes below. Please review the front and back scans — they show the exact card you will receive, including centering, corners, edges and surface. **The defect first: the upper-left corner is folded, with softness at the tip.** Under 6x the tip reads blunted rather than square, with lifted fibres right at the apex and a diffuse grey-brown compression band spreading roughly 2 mm inward along both the top and left edges. The stock is visibly flattened there. This card is graded **EX (Excellent)** for that reason. Be aware that **a flatbed scan photographs a folded corner nearly flat**, so the image below understates it — the description is the accurate account. **Also disclosed:** the lower-right corner has a short dark crease or hook mark about 3-4 mm in from the tip, and the upper-right corner has a small tan ding. The lower-left is the cleanest of the four. The edges show light fraying and chipping typical of 1982 stock, heaviest along the top-left. Centering, left to right, measured against the outermost printed element on each side: **about 50/50 — excellent**. **Top-to-bottom has no valid symmetric reference** — the 1982 design has a photo frame at the top and a name-and-position panel with no corresponding bottom rule — so no vertical figure is quoted. The surface carries the fine print-snow speckle normal for this issue, with no creases through the image. |

1982 Topps is the 792-card set with the diagonal name-and-position banner. This is the **base** card. **Not serial numbered**; the era predates it. **Not a short print** — 1982 Topps has no SP designations. The back carries **no CODE# line**, only a `B*` printer mark beside the 1982 copyright. **One thing worth ruling out explicitly, because it is worth twenty times as much.** There is a known **"blackless" error** of 1982 Topps in which the black ink layer is missing entirely, and #49 is among the cards it affects. **This card is not blackless** — the black printing is fully present, including the photo-frame rule and the black type, and it was used as a measurement reference for centering. If you are shopping for the blackless variation, this is not it.
