Why This Card Matters
A 1976 Topps card of Cliff Johnson from his Astros years, when he was a catcher who could hit. The back prints his 1975 season at 122 games, 94 hits, 20 home runs, 65 RBI and a .277 average, against major league totals of 217 games, 140 hits, 32 home runs and 100 RBI. The vitals list him at 6'4" and 225 pounds, born July 22, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas. The cartoon panel records that Walter Wilmot of Chicago was called out twice in one game after being hit by his own batted balls on September 30, 1890.

| Condition | Raw / Ungraded — Sold as EX with damage to all four corners. Top left: blunted and rounded with a nick at the apex and tan discolouration where the surface is broken, with white fibres fraying along both adjoining edges. Top right: blunted and slightly folded back with a dark ding at the apex. Bottom left: soft and rounded with white fibre fuzz, a dark scuff just below it on the bottom edge, and a faint vertical crease running up through the orange panel. Bottom right: blunted and rounded with raised white fibres and light chipping along the right edge. There is also scattered print speckling and light soiling across the pink and orange bands, and faint surface wrinkle lines through the lower bands. Centering is well off: roughly 30/70 left to right and cut noticeably low. |
