Seller Description

1957 VINTAGE

1957 Topps Hobie Landrith

Card #182 · Base · St. Louis Cardinals

You are buying the exact card pictured — the 1957 Topps card of Cardinals catcher Hobie Landrith, #182, a sixty-nine-year-old piece of cardboard from the first Topps set to use the modern 2.5 x 3.5 size - and the exact copy in the scans, wear and all.

GRADED VG - PRICED AS A PLAYED COPY, NOT NEAR MINT

This is an honestly worn 1957 card: the corners are rounded, the edges show chipping along the left and top, and there is light creasing into the top-left corner. It is priced off Buy It Now sales of other VG/VGEX copies, not off the sharper examples in the same comp set.

Why This Card Matters

Landrith caught 111 games for the Cubs in 1956 and came to St. Louis in the trade that sent Ray Katt to Chicago, batting .232 across seven big-league seasons with Cincinnati, Chicago and the Cardinals. He is best remembered as the very first player selected by the New York Mets in the 1961 expansion draft, which Casey Stengel explained by saying you have to have a catcher or you will have a lot of passed balls. The 1957 Topps set was the first to adopt the 2.5 by 3.5 inch format that every card since has used, and #182 is his only Cardinals-uniform card in that landmark issue.
