The back notes he topped the National League shortstops in fielding for the second straight year in 1953, a season in which he played 150 games with 167 hits, 27 doubles, 11 home runs, 73 RBI and a .273 average, handling 481 assists against 20 errors for a .975 fielding mark. After returning from military service he broke in with Evansville in 1947 and hit .331. The "Inside Baseball" cartoons add that although he was not a power hitter he was feared by pitchers, and that he broke up two no-hitters with late-inning hits in the American Association in 1950. This is a seventy-two-year-old card from one of the most collected sets Topps ever produced.

<!-- ========== 5. The surface shows a dense network of fine scratches in the navy cap area at high zoom, plus a short fine light line across the face at eyebrow level that reads as a light surface crease or scratch. The back is toned tan/cream with scattered dark foxing specks. There is no writing, no tape and no pinholes.
